Ripio launches wARS: the Argentine peso enters the crypto world

Updated: 5 days ago

Digital design with a retro aesthetic and a light blue sky background featuring clouds and a moon. In the center, a wooden desk rests on a cloud with a computer and a lamp. In the foreground, large white and yellow text reads: “debuta WARS primer cripto DEL PESO ARS.” In the bottom right corner, a light blue coin with the white wARS logo is visible. Cinematic visual style with grain texture and a nostalgic tone.

Ripio —an Argentine company that operates as an exchange (a kind of online crypto marketplace)— introduced wARS, a digital stablecoin that’s worth the same as one Argentine peso..

Literally, 1 wARS = 1 peso.

It doesn’t rise or fall every minute like Bitcoin: the idea is that you can use it just like regular money, but within the crypto universe.

What is it for?

wARS lets you pay, transfer, or store value in pesos within crypto networks like Ethereum, Base, and World Chain.

Imagine being able to send money at any hour, without waiting for the bank to open — and without anyone freezing your transfer.

It works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Ripio says this is the first of several Latin American stablecoins: each country will have its own version in local currency.

Argentina’s was the first to launch.

What exactly is Ripio?

Ripio is a platform where you can buy, sell, and use cryptocurrencies from Argentina.

It works like an app such as Mercado Pago or Ualá, but instead of managing bank pesos, it handles digital assets.

You can also store your coins there, just like keeping a balance in Personal Pay.

Why all the fuss about a “stablecoin”?

Because regular cryptocurrencies (like Bitcoin or Ethereum) change in value all the time.

A stablecoin aims for the opposite: to always maintain the same value as a known currency.

In this case, the Argentine peso

It’s useful for paying without worrying about volatility and for moving money quickly between people or apps.

It’s not about avoiding banks — it’s about gaining time freedom.

Many people think the crypto world exists just to “escape the system.”

But that’s not the point.

It’s about having another option: instant transfers, no schedules, no amount limits, and far less middlemen.

You can use it from your digital wallet (like apps such as Mercado Pago, Ualá, or Personal Pay) or directly through the Ripio app.

For those already in the crypto world

If you’re already moving between wallets, DEXs, and tokens, wARS opens an interesting door:

Would you find a peso-based stablecoin useful for local payments, or would you rather stick with USDT or USDC?

Would you use it as a bridge between apps — to simplify withdrawals or payments without converting to fiat?

Or would you only consider it if it had direct integration with local DEXs or cheaper on/off-ramps?

At first, it will likely work more as a domestic rail than as a store of value —

but the real interest lies in how it connects with merchants, regional DeFi, and platforms working in local currency.

Real adoption won’t depend on price — it’ll depend on everyday usability.

10 things to check before using wARS (a practical list, no sermons)

1️⃣ Which network you’ll use (Ethereum, Base, or another): it affects transaction fees..

2️⃣ How you’ll buy it: through your Ripio account or a wallet app that supports it.

3️⃣ Where it’s accepted for payments: merchants, platforms, or people who also use it.

4️⃣ Where you’ll store it: in the Ripio app or your personal wallet (convenience vs. control).

5️⃣ What you want it for: payments, transfers, digital savings, or crypto project participation.

6️⃣ Availability: it operates 24/7, no bank holidays.

7️⃣ Key management: keep your access codes safe (like a wallet PIN).

8️⃣ Official updates: follow Ripio’s accounts — not WhatsApp chains.

9️⃣ Start small: always move small amounts first to test it.

🔟 Learn before investing: understand how networks work before putting all your trust in them.

Why this matters

Because for the first time, the Argentine peso has its digital version within a global ecosystem.

And that’s no small thing.

It means that from Argentina, value can be sent anywhere — in seconds — using a tool created right here.

It’s not a promise or a utopia: it’s infrastructure.
